2016 Nelson Old Home Week

SATURDAY, 8/6 Dudley Laufman will lead the dancing at a special Old Home Week edition of the Nelson Saturday Contra Dance on August 6th. Dancing begins at 7:30 PM. Beginners and singles are welcome and all dances are taught throughout the evening. Admission is only $2, thanks to the generosity of an anonymous benefactor. The dance takes place in the historic Town Hall in Nelson, NH and is sponsored by the Monadnock Folklore Society. For more information call 603.762.0235 or visitwww.monadnockfolk.org.

MONDAY, 8/8 Carnivalcopia Nelson Town Hall, 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Play games and win new/gently used prizes. This event is geared toward children ages 4 to 10, but all are welcome. FREE! Sponsored by Nelson School alumni and friends.

WEDNESDAY, 8/10 Old Home Week Ham & Bean Dinner Nelson Church Melville Hall, 5 to7 p.m. Enjoy delicious food and homemade pies. Cost is $8.00 for adults and $6.00 for children under ten. Hosted by Nelson Congregational Church and the Chapel by the Lake.

World of Wonder Magician Bob Riordan Nelson Town Hall, 6:30 p.m. Free! All are welcome.

THURSDAY, 8/11 Capture the Flag Nelson Ball Field, 6:30 p.m. All are welcome. Monadnock Music Concert Nelson Congregational Church, 7:30 p.m. Free, but voluntary donations are appreciated. Music by Franz Haydn, Igor Stravinsky, Carl Bettendorf, Charles Ives, and Franz Schubert, performed by the Monadnock Music String Quartet.

Saturday, August 8th, Contra Dance with Dudley Laufman and Friends, starting at 7:30 pm.  Suggested Donation $2.00.

Sunday, August 9th. Old Home Sunday Service Start Old Home Week with thanksgiving at the Nelson Congregational Church at 9:30 a.m. Town-Wide Sunday Picnic Pack a picnic basket, a blanket and a smile as you join fellow residents on the soft green lawn of the church for a picnic. The picnic starts about noon and lasts as long as you want to stay. Relax, enjoy good company and make your plans for the upcoming week. Pack in and pack out—leave the lawn as lovely as you found it.

Monday August 10, 2015  4:00 – 6:00 pm            CARNIVALCOPIA!
Join us at the town common and town hall for a variety of fun games and activities led by Nelson School alumni and friends. The games are aimed for ages 4 – 10 but all are welcome.  Admission is free and everyone will win prizes. Old Home Week Ham n Bean Dinner, Wednesday, August 12th, at the Nelson Congregational Church. Ham, Baked Beans, coleslaw, rolls, pickles, pies everything homemade except for the ham.$9.00 adults, $6.00 children under 10, at the Nelson Church Melville Hall. Hosted by Nelson Congregational Church and the Chapel by the Lake. Enjoy delicious food and homemade pies. Doors open at 5:00 p.m. – dinner will be served until 7:00 p.m.  Afterwards come see the:

Thursday, August 13th,
 The Nelson Trail Committee Old Home Day Hike is Thursday, August 13. Meet in the Village at 5:00 PM to car pool to the trail head of Bailey Brook and Kulish Ledges Trails. Hikers will have the option of either trail. The Bailey Brook hike will be led by Rick Church and will take about an hour. The Kulish Ledges hike will be led by Kathy Schillemat and will take about 2 1/2 hours.  Everyone welcome. Please join the Nelson Trail Committee for one of these two beautiful hikes. Capture the Flag game at the Nelson Ball Field (behind the town barn). Starting time is 6:00 p.m. All ages are welcome!
Friday, Aug. 14th,Spoonwood and Nubausit

 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. Pre-sale Book Sale at the Town Hall. Friends of the Library sponsored event. Come browse at your leisure before the crowds on Saturday. All proceeds benefit the library. Town of Nelson Residents only , please. No dealers.

Movie Night – “Paddington” at the Nelson Town Hall. Starts at 7:00 p.m. Free admission. Sponsored by the Nelson School PTO.


Saturday August 15th, Annual Old Home Day

9am  – Noon, Friends of the Library  Book Sale to benefit the Library.  Downstairs below the Library in the meeting room.

 Fun family-centered activities all day long, beginning at 9:00 am!
Possibly the last bastion of amateur excellence in American sports.
Foot races, tug-of-war, egg toss, and even more. 

*Races on the Town Common @ 9:00 am.

Bike race (helmets required) and Nelson Marathon. Please note that the races start at 9:00 a.m.


Frog Jumping Contest – 9:15 a.m. Please return your frog to the pond.


THE 2016 NELSON CALENDARS HAVE ARRIVED and …
The 2016 calendars were delivered in time so we are good to go for selling them at Old Home Day, August 15 from 9 to 12 in the Library Lower Level, as part of the Library Book Sale. We will sell them Friday night at the Preview from 7 to 8 as well.
The schedule is as follows:
Friday 7-8 pm; Saturday  9-noon, in conjunction with the Library Book Sale.
It’s a wonderful calendar. Thank you to one and all for making it happen.


10am – noon: The library will be open for people to cool down, have a quiet moment, take out books or DVDs, use a computer or use our craft table.


The Nelson Agricultural Commission will be showcasing local farm animals, produce and food preservation techniques on Saturday, Nelson’s Old Home Day.  They will have a table and display on Saturday Aug. 15th 9am-Noon, located between the Town Hall and Town office buildings.
Be sure to stop by and see our local farm animal exhibit, learn about Nelson’s farm animal population, and pick up a revised version of our Nelson Producer’s Directory and list of upcoming events.


Free Blood Pressure and Blood Sugar testing by the Nelson Fire Department.

Nelson Town Band – 11:30 a.m. at the church

Old Home Day Chicken Barbeque – noon at the church, Menu: 1/2 chicken, corn on the cob, potato salad, tomato and cucumber slices, roll and beverage, $10.

*Old Home Day Speaker On the Church Lawn at 1:30 pm.  Search and Rescue Officer Bill Boudreau and his rescue dog.

*Waterball @ Mackenzie’s Field at 2:30 pm.
Bring your A game and a towel (or two or three)!
All the youth in town like this event. Most years it’s girls against the
boys!

Community Softball Game – 3:00 p.m. at the Nelson ballfield, behind the town barn. All are welcome to play. Bring water, a baseball glove and enthusiasm.

Remember to bring your own lawn chairs to Old Home Day. You’ll be much more comfortable while eating lunch and watching the festivities

* Coffee House in the Town Hall starting at 7:00 pm.
