July Paddle with the Trail Committee

by on July 11, 2017 in Home Page, Nelson Trail Group

Another Magical Day on the Great Meadow – brought to you by the Nelson Trail Committee.

17 paddlers in 11 kayaks and 2 canoes made their way from Nubanusit to Harrisville Pond Sunday afternoon, July 9th. The group consisted of young and old, Nelsonites and friends from Hancock and Antrim. The weather was perfect, the company was great and the water was running strong. We made our way over and around many beaver dams as the water level changed.  We surprised a deer in the Great Meadow, a buck with two velvet points on each side. He jumped up about 20 yards in front of the lead kayaks  and bounded away. Later another deer, a doe, swam across the stream in front of us and posed on the bank while several of us got a good look at it. Thanks to Dave Birchenough for organizing another great trip.

Nubanusit Lake to the Spoonwood Pond Hike

by on February 16, 2016 in Nelson Trail Group, Promote
You are invited to hike across Nubanusit Lake to the dam at the end of Spoonwood Pond on Saturday, February 20, 2016 at 11 AM – 2 PM.

Looking northeast at Nubanusit Lake from the Spoonwood Pond Dam
Join the Nelson Trail Committee for a leisurely walk across the ice of Nubanusit Lake, through the isthmus of Louis Cabot Preserve, across pristine Spoonwood Pond to its 1859 vintage 12’ high and 280’ long dam & spillway. For more than 100 years that impoundment provided much of the energy necessary to power the Harrisville mills.

At the dam, the Trail Committee will host a free cookout and provide hot dogs, chips, cookies and hot chocolate. Depending on conditions, bring ice walkers (such as STABILicers or Yaktrax), boots, snowshoes or cross country skis  – your choice. Round trip: 4 miles. Total elevation gain: 0 feet. Meet at Dave Birchenough’s (827-3552) at 162 Nubanusit Road, Nelson at 11 AM. We should be back by 2:00 PM.
