DIG INTO READING!

During this year’s Summer Reading Program, the Nelson Library will be digging into the exciting world that lies beneath our feet!  Kids are invited to join the underground expedition at our weekly programs on Wednesdays at 4pm for an hour of crafts, games, stories, and adventure!

Wednesday, July 10th – Rock and Read

The library will be rocking out this week as we kick off our summer reading program! Come join the rock-related fun and hear about all the cool prizes and activities available at the library throughout the summer. Come join the rock-related fun and hear about all the cool prizes and activities available at the library throughout the summer.

Wednesday, July 17th – Burrow into a Good Book

Did you know that the average mole eats 45-50 pounds of worms and insects in a year? During this week’s underground exploration we’ll make a neat craft, play a group game, and learn about animals that live underground in our own backyards!

Wednesday, July 24th – Unearth an Awesome Read

Though you probably won’t find them in your backyard, fossils are a lot of fun to learn about! This week we’ll read Skippy Jon Jones & the Big Bones, do shoe box excavations, and dig into other archeological activities.

Wednesday, July 31st – Tunnel into a Terrific Story

Have you ever seen a cave? What might you find if you went exploring in one? We’ll be talking about caves, and unearthing more adventure at the library this week as we make miniature caves and do some cave art!

Wednesday, August 7th – Grow Crazy with Books

What reads and lives in an apple? A book worm! During this week’s program, Val, a worm expert will be visiting us to talk about worms! Bring your worm questions for Val, and be ready to play garden bingo.

Our summer programs are geared for kindergarten through elementary aged kids. Younger children are welcome, but we suggest that they bring a helper with them.

Summer Reading Program Prizes!

If you would like to earn a prize this summer, here’s how it works…

  • Every time you return a book and record it on a Summer Reading Program book log you may put your name in the jar on the library counter. Every week we will pull a name from the jar and that person will receive a gift certificate!

  • When you have recorded 10 books on your reading log you can get a certificate for free Ice cream at Twinkle Town in Keene!

How the Program Works:

  • Children in preschool through high school can participate.

  • Children may start the reading program any time after the last day of school.

  • Children may start a log to record the titles of books they read this summer upon returning their first book.

  • Many local businesses have donated incentive prizes which  children will have a chance to earn/win as they read library books.

  • Everyone who completes the program by finishing 10 books (books over 300 pages count as 2 books) in their reading level will be given a reading program certificate.

  • We welcome children of all abilities.
